Assessment

Every client relationship begins with a comprehensive intake and assessment. This process can be formal (using standardized measures) or informal, relying on caregiver insights and clinical observations.

Evaluations are conducted in person and typically last between 60 to 90 minutes. Depending on the specific concerns, we assess various areas, including receptive language (understanding), expressive language (use), articulation (speech), and functional communication.

Both formal and informal evaluation tools are utilized to determine whether an individual demonstrates typical speech, language, and communication skills or if therapy and targeted interventions are necessary.

For non-speaking or non-verbal individuals, we integrate observations and assessments of strengths and challenges to identify current communication modalities. This helps us outline the next steps to enhance functional communication. Often, this involves feature matching and developing a personalized multimodal Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system tailored to the individual’s needs.

Therapy

Direct one-on-one therapy is available at home or in the community, with tailored session lengths for individual needs (typically 45 to 60 minutes). We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate the unique requirements of both the family and the client.

For AAC users, therapy focuses on enhancing their competencies in five key areas: Operational, Linguistic, Functional/Social, Strategic, and Emotional Competence. The goal is to foster ownership and effective use of their AAC system, ultimately improving overall functional communication.

Training

We offer direct support for families and educational teams on the effective implementation of AAC. This includes education on various communication modalities and the different AAC systems available.

Once a system is developed and acquired, we provide ongoing training for programming, maintenance, and effective use, ensuring families feel confident and equipped. Additionally, tailored presentations and training sessions are available for schools and interdisciplinary teams to enhance collaboration and understanding.

Consultation

We provide knowledgeable and skilled support for families and educational teams. Our consultation includes input on assessment and intervention strategies for students in need of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), as well as speech and language services. We offer education on various types of AAC and effective implementation strategies for classroom staff, along with assistance in developing measurable goals for both teams and clients.

Our consultation services are designed to support families navigating the school evaluation process, including the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and advocacy for appropriate services from IEP teams.

Consultation options:

  • For School Teams: We provide observations and tailored recommendations for student-specific or classroom AT/AAC development and implementation.
  • For Parents: We offer guidance and support in seeking evaluations and developing implementation strategies. We also help parents understand and navigate the public school educational services delivery model, providing step-by-step assistance from referral and initial evaluation to re-evaluation and the development and review of IEPs.

Two of my children are non-speaking and our household is bilingual. We had gotten a tablet for our older child through a children’s hospital and started speech with Caralee after struggling to get consistent scheduling elsewhere. When my younger daughter’s speech was also delayed, we turned to Caralee for her opinion. The experience was night and day in comparison to our first experience where we felt like a number. She helped us through multiple trials, letting us really explore what company and device would be best for our baby, while also guiding us to the perfect tablet. I think Caralee is the best fit for all families!
